Installation

Lernbuddy runs on Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit). The program itself is small; the AI model Lernbuddy uses to make cards and chat is downloaded once after installation.

System requirements

The AI runs on the computer itself. A graphics card makes it much faster; without one Lernbuddy still works but answers more slowly. Computers with an ARM processor are not supported at the moment.

Option 1: Microsoft Store

Search the Microsoft Store for "Lernbuddy" and install it. Updates arrive automatically, and uninstalling also removes the AI model completely.

Option 2: Setup file

1. Download LernbuddySetup.exe from the download page.
2. Run the file. No administrator rights are needed – Lernbuddy is installed for the current Windows user account only.
3. At the end of the setup you can start Lernbuddy right away.

The setup file brings everything Lernbuddy needs; neither .NET nor any other runtime has to be installed first.

"Windows protected your PC"

The setup file is not signed with a paid certificate, so Windows SmartScreen shows an "unknown publisher" warning the first time. To install anyway, click More info and then Run anyway.

If you'd rather avoid that, use the Microsoft Store version – Microsoft checks and signs that package.

After installation

On first start, Lernbuddy asks whether to download the AI model now. That needs a Wi-Fi connection and some patience – details in The AI model.

The practice cards that come with the app (English irregular verbs, capitals of Europe) already work in the quiz without the model.

Uninstalling

Via Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Lernbuddy → Uninstall.

With the setup version, the AI model and the flashcards stay in the user data folder, so a reinstall doesn't have to download 4.6 GB again. To get the space back, use Windows search to find the file gemma-4-E4B-it-Q4_K_M.gguf and delete it.
