Privacy and your data
NovaSql works locally. There is no account, no telemetry and no usage statistics.
What NovaSql sends to the internet
- Only with the Anthropic Claude provider: when you improve a query, the editor's content goes to Anthropic's API. Result data from the database is not sent.
- With Source Control: pull and push talk to the configured Git server.
- Connections to your own SQL Servers, of course.
With a local AI provider (Foundry Local or Ollama) no SQL leaves your computer. See Setting up AI.
Where your data lives
Everything is stored in your user profile under %AppData%\NovaSql:
| File | Content |
|---|---|
settings.json |
settings, API key, language |
connections.json |
connections; passwords encrypted |
session.json |
open tabs and connections from last time |
history.db |
query history |
changetracking.db |
snapshots of the change tracking |
There is also a diagnostic log at %LocalAppData%\NovaSql\novasql.log. It contains program starts, shutdowns and technical error messages, but no result data.
The Store version keeps the same files in a separate area managed by Windows.
Passwords
Passwords and connection strings are encrypted with Windows DPAPI. Only your own Windows account on this computer can decrypt them. A copied connections.json is therefore useless on another machine; simply create the connections there again.
Query history
Every query you run is stored in the history with server, database, duration and row count, including any literal values it contains. If you'd rather not keep that, delete entries one by one or all at once, see Query history.
